The Toyota Camry ticks all of the boxes from a manufacturers point of view; it’s popular, sells a lot and generates a ton of revenue. But, from a car-enthusiasts perspective, you sometimes wonder why so many people across the world choose the Camry as their midsize sedan. Nothing screams out at you as being amazing, but it does offer a solid amount across the board.
Now, while the 2018 version isn’t a brand-new model, it does come with a significant redesign that offers a wealth of upgrades. In a nutshell, there’s increased power, improved safety features, better efficiency and updated styling. But, let’s delve into each aspect of the car, so you can really get to know the 2018 Toyota Camry…
How does 206-BHP and 186-pound-feet of torque sound? Well, that’s exactly what you’ll get with the Camry through it’s its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. All of that power is pushed through the 8-speed automatic gearbox and delivered via a front-wheel drive setup. Although, it’s worth noting that to feel any sort of pull you’ll need to notch up some serious revs, as there’s no turbocharger whatsoever to assist.
Alongside the power, the 2018 model has received some tuning in regard to the steering and handling. New rear suspension has been implemented, and the steering platform has been tightened to ensure the drive experience is much smoother. Furthermore, if you’re wondering about the fuel economy, here are the stats; 28 city / 39 highway / 32 combined.
If you’re someone that has always appreciated the unique appearance of the Camry, then you’ll be glad to learn that Toyota have stepped the styling up a notch this year. With sleek lines and an aggressive look to the front, you’ll truly stand out on the road.
But, if there is some room for manoeuvre, as Toyota will offer various trims to suit your style; a trim with subtler fascias is a good example. Plus, they’ve adapted the roofline to guarantee more headroom in for passengers sitting in the rear, and larger side windows to increase visibility from the cabin.
If you step inside the car, you’ll find that there is a touch of luxury to the cabin. There’s lovely leather seating, nicely finished dashboard and some gloss around the centre console. But, the best element about the interior is the sheer amount of room that you’re blessed with. The Toyota designers have done a wonderful job of forging a very spacious sedan.
Within the centre console, there’s a huge head-up display, a number of USB ports and wireless charging capability. However, some people will be disappointed to hear that Toyota still do not offer Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto with the Camry. Although, they have stated that they will be coming very soon.
Moreover, safety features are where the Camry really shines. Regardless of the model that you purchase, you’ll be protected by the Toyota Safety Sense. Within the standard arsenal of safety precautions, you have full-speed radar-based cruise control, lane departure warnings, lane assist, automatic emergency braking and automatic high beams.
If you want to pay a bit more, you can also add extras such as blind spot alerts, rear-cross traffic alerts, front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system. Ultimately, Toyota place a large amount of attention on the safety of all of their cars, and the Camry is no different.
As for what it will take out of your bank account – not as much as you might think, actually. You see, the base model comes loaded with basic tech, infotainment and safety features, all for $23,495. That price tag is very impressive when comparing it to other midsize sedans on the market.
Although, if you want to splash out and grab yourself a mean version of the Camry, you could always opt for the XSE model. You can either select the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine to go with it, or the meatier 3.5-liter V6 engine, but the price of the XSE will start at $35,333.
