Porsche Details the 2014 918 Spyder Hybrid

In a recent press release, Porsche details their all new 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid. According to Porsche, the new 918 Drivers has a unique all wheel drive system with a combustion and electric motor on the rear axle and a second electric motor on the front axle. Down to the chassis and axles, this 918 was built with racing and motor sport in mind.

Rear axle steering adjusts to based on driving speeds to steer the back wheels in same direction OR opposite direction. For example, at lower speeds the rear wheels will turn opposite of the front wheels for faster and more direct cornering.

The car has 5 driving modes:
  • E-Power - Described as quiet and elegant. This is the default driving mode.
  • Hybrid - Efficient and comfortable.
  • Sport Hybrid - Sporty and dynamic.
  • Race Hybrid - For fast laps.
  • Hot Lap - For pole position.
The electric motors are powered by a 312 cell lithium-ion battery with an energy content of about seven kilowatt hours. The vehicle's charging station can reportedly fully charge the battery in an impressive 25 minutes. When only driving on the electric motors, this car has a range of approximately 18 miles.

The V8 engine and two electric motors have a combined 887 horsepower with a top speed of 211 MPH (93 on electric only). It will reach 0-60 MPH in less than 2.8. Porsche plans on additional lap and road testing, but as of now this new 918 has a recorded Nürburgring lap time of 7 minutes, 14 seconds.
