Formula E Tech Gives Audi RS3 a Huge Boost in Horsepower

By Bryan D on May 31, 2018

The Audi Sport ABT team perform brilliantly in Formula E, but they do so with the backing and support of a significant sponsor – Schaeffler. Recently, the automotive group decided to embark on the 4ePerformance project, which involves immersing the phenomenal powertrain of an FE01 racer under the hood of an Audi RS3.

In Layman’s terms, that means a whole heap of extra power from an electric motor. The RS3 can now generate a whopping 1,180-BHP and hits 124-MPH in less than seven seconds. Impressive, huh?

Alongside the additional power, the RS3 now features a gearbox on the axle of two electric motors, which enhances the handling. You see, each battery emits 64 kilowatt hours of energy, and the two gearboxes enables torque vectoring to adjust cornering whilst going around a bend. Despite the success of the project, Schaeffler aren’t planning on going into 4ePerformance racing.

This was just a test to determine how easily they could implement Formula E technology into mass-produced cars; a test that they passed with flying colours. Simon Opel, Director of Special Projects Motorsports, stated –

“For Schaeffler, this vehicle is a test laboratory on wheels thanks to its free scaling options for the drive power.”

At the moment, Formula E is overseeing a switch to larger batteries which eradicate the problem driver’s face of having to swap cars mid-race. Plus, brands such as Porsche and Mercedes-Benz are in the process of joining the series and are preparing for the new Gen2 car which will be introduced in the 18/19 season.
