The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2023 XC60 Recharge the highest rating of Good in all six original crash tests and the second-highest rating of Acceptable in the updated side test. The IIHS awarded the Volvo a TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation, the organization's highest honor. The XC60 also received an Acceptable rating for how well its headlights illuminate the road.

The IIHS uses a different scale for grading collision avoidance features. The XC60 Recharge earned the highest rating of Superior for its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system. In the vehicle-to-pedestrian tests, the daytime system earned a Superior rating, while the nighttime system received the midtier rating of Advanced.
